What is the UN Biodiversity Lab?
The UN Biodiversity Lab (UNBL) is a UN platform that provides users with access to over 400 high quality global datasets on biodiversity, climate change, and sustainable development. Our goal is to enable decision-makers to use spatial data to put nature at the center of sustainable development.
I’m not part of an organization or government. Can I still access the data?
Yes! UNBL is for anyone who is interested in learning more about mapping, conservation, and sustainable development. Anyone is welcome to create an account and access our global datasets. The platform displays both open data layers as well as data layers which may be subject to use restrictions; please check the data license in the dataset information box (displayed when clicking on the ‘i’ icon next to the dataset name)
Why do I need to log-in or create an account?
Creating an account will enable you to clip and download data on the platform from an area of interest, as well as gain access to your own secure workspace(s) with additional functionalities, including uploading and styling your own data layers, uploading areas of interest as places and viewing dynamic metrics for them, creating your own custom metrics, and accessing the ELSA Integrated Spatial Planning Tool. Please see the
Secure Workspaces User Guide to learn more about workspaces and how to request a workspace.
How do I create an account?
Click the ‘Launch map’ button on the UNBL home page to launch the map application, then select the account icon in the top right hand corner and choose ‘Sign up’, and follow the instructions. You will receive an email confirmation within a few minutes to verify your account.
Is the UN Biodiversity Lab open source?
The UN Biodiversity Lab is not currently open source.
What browser works best with the UN Biodiversity Lab?
UNBL is compatible with Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari browsers. If your browser is not up to date, you may receive an error message. If you have any related issues that are not resolved, please don’t hesitate to contact us at
support@unbiodiversitylab.org.
Is the UN Biodiversity Lab interoperable with other geospatial platforms?
Yes. UNBL is built to interoperate with other geospatial systems, making it easy to bring in data (rasters and shapes) from platforms like Google Earth Engine, Mapbox, and Esri. We support a wide range of technical formats—from standard OGC services (WMS/WMTS) and STAC COG assets to specialized vector tiles (pg_tileserv and Martin).
Beyond importing data, UNBL allows users to download layers for further analysis in GIS software like QGIS or ArcGIS. To further streamline this, we have launched an open instance of the UNBL STAC. This provides ‘streaming’ access to our datasets, allowing you to run complex global analyses in QGIS, ArcGIS, and other GIS software without the time-consuming process of downloading heavy data files. For more information on the UNBL STAC, see our UNBL data page.
